Jeff Lorez has a heart to heart with the singer/writer who reveals the inner turmoil and pain he’s now exorcised with the release of his new album.

“I’ve lived in LA for most of my career” explained El Debarge when I spoke to the slender, youthful-faced singer at Warner Bros Records’ New York offices. Seeing El, it was hard to believe that “most of his career” meant fourteen years, beginning of course, with his most fruitful period in the early ‘80’s on Motown Records, as the lead singer of family group DeBarge. “In between I’ve lived in Houston and I moved back to Grand Rapids in Michigan but I never stayed there for more than six months. I always moved back to LA”.

“What made you go back?” I ventured.

“I was tryin’ to find myself. It was all part of El tryin’ to find El. I learned from all the movin’ that I’m still tryin’ to find myself. I ain’t gotten there yet! (laughs).

Flashback Article: DeBarge Is Confident in Solo Role. Schenectady Gazette, 1986

El DeBarge, a dapper young man with a glossy voice and a precocious command of pop, isn’t worried about performing solo.

He’s confident, in fact, that his dates opening for the Pointer Sisters -- one is tonight, when Anita, Ruth and June Pointer and their band headline at the Saratoga Performing Arts Center, in their third area appearance in two years -- will be a lot of fun.

In a recent telephone interview from Los Angeles, the Grand Rapids, Mich., native said he’s very proud of his first solo album, “El DeBarge,” released on Gordy Records at the beginning of May.

As part of the group DeBarge, pop singer El Debarge, 25, co-produced and co-wrote the group’s three gold albums. One, “In a Special Way,” earned a Grammy nomination. El Debarge sand all five DeBarge pop hits, including “Rhythm of the Night” and “Who’s Holding Donna Now.” He has gone solo now and his first single, “Who’s Johnny?,” was an instant hit. He is single and lives in Los Angeles.

Chris Wells looks into the eye of El DeBarge, teen idol turned grown-up

echoes

A MOTOWN deal in their teens, a string of hit records---'All This Love', 'I Like It', 'In A Special Way', 'Rhythm Of The Night' -- by the mid-eighties, and a popular, distinctive lead vocalist set fair for a soaraway solo career: DeBarge could have been another Jacksons.

But, by 1984, they had disbanded, brother James securing for himself a dubious reputation courtesy some unfortunate extra-curricular activities (see former spouse, Janet Jackson for details), and frontman, El, saw out the decade along, his two solo albums for Barry Gordy reflecting the decline in the great entrepreneur's business fortunes. The kind of loose ends that take some re-weaving.

1992 finds El DeBarge signed to Warner Bros, not so much newly signed, since the deal was struck back in '89, but, one the evidence of 'In The Storm', inspired afresh. He's now 30 years old, still baby-faced, but no longer the innocent startled by his own teen sex symbol image. In short, he's grown up:

In Review: El Debarge @ Essence Music Festival 2011

Last night the Essence Music Festival was kicked off by music great El Debarge. Below are excerpts from the official review on Essence.com:
The second night of the 2011 ESSENCE Music Festival was one attendees won’t soon forget. The evening was jam-packed with one thrill after another as El Debarge, Chaka Khan, Jill Scott, and headliner Kanye West all took to the stage.

El Debarge kicked the evening off with his big comeback performance. He opened with a tribute to all his classics. Guests swayed and cheered as Debarge delivered greats like “Rhythm of the Night” and “There’ll Never Be” and when he got to “I Like It’ the crowd went wild. His fans proudly cheered him on to express their gratitude for his pitch-perfect performance (even when he was sitting on the stage Indian style while singing) and they immediately took to Twitter to tell the world he was back to his old self again. He also performed his latest hit “Second Chance” much to the joy of fans...

Simply put; Kanye, Jill, Chaka, and El Debarge were the dream team last night.

Video: The Secret Garden Chapter

In 1991, Listen Up!, a documentary on the life of Quincy Jones was released. One part of the documentary,"The Secret Garden Chapter", focuses on Quincy's struggle between his career and 3 marriages, while also sharing some behind the scenes studio footage from the making of "The Secret Garden" to help tell the story. El DeBarge played a significant roll in the creation of this song,he spent two days in Quincy's home studio writing his own verse as well as Barry White's, and lending his vocals to lead vocals and background. It is said that El only did one take of his verse in the studio, Quincy felt it was perfect and used it on the final track. "The Secret Garden" spent 17 weeks on the R&B/Hip-Hop charts and peaked at #1 in March, 1990.
