El DeBarge, a dapper young man with a glossy voice and a precocious command of pop, isn’t worried about performing solo.
He’s confident, in fact, that his dates opening for the Pointer Sisters -- one is tonight, when Anita, Ruth and June Pointer and their band headline at the Saratoga Performing Arts Center, in their third area appearance in two years -- will be a lot of fun.
In a recent telephone interview from Los Angeles, the Grand Rapids, Mich., native said he’s very proud of his first solo album, “El DeBarge,” released on Gordy Records at the beginning of May.

As part of the group DeBarge, pop singer El Debarge, 25, co-produced and co-wrote the group’s three gold albums. One, “In a Special Way,” earned a Grammy nomination. El Debarge sand all five DeBarge pop hits, including “Rhythm of the Night” and “Who’s Holding Donna Now.” He has gone solo now and his first single, “Who’s Johnny?,” was an instant hit. He is single and lives in Los Angeles.

Motown has been going through a period of transition recently…or what you might call a bout of spring cleaning of their roster of artists. Out in recent months have gone such artists as the Commodores and the Dazz Band amidst omnipresent rumors of other acts leaving for pastures new.
Fresh blood within the company has with a few exceptions, been neither commercially nor artistically successful in comparison to the glorious past. It’s been a relatively bleak period but the signs are good for a plausible upturn in fortune with such new signees as Stacy Lattisaw and Chico DeBarge.

We've uploaded rare audio of Chico DeBarge's "Easier Said Than Done", a song that was on the A Fine Mess movie soundtrack released by Motown in 1986. The style of this song is very different from anything released by Chico--listening closely it sounds like El may possibly be singing on the background vocals. Enjoy!

A very rare "open-ended" interview with El Debarge from 1986 Motown Promotional Disk. Motown created four "Superstar Interview Disks" (the others were for Smokey Robinson, Sam Harris, and Vanity) of which El's is said to be the last. Listen to the interview below in two parts:
